Westerns

The Old West relates to the years between the end of the Civil War in 1865 through to about 1890. It spanned the vast area west of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. But for most of us, the Old West is not really a time or a place but a state of mind. On the radio, the westerns were the stories of heroes and gunfighters, of bandits and marshals (or rangers). Many were based in the books of writers like Zane Grey, others in the pulp fiction of the 20s and 30s. A number of western radio stars were movie stars of the time: Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy and many others.
